It did not take long for the Red Wings to register their first goal of the regular season- just 1.02 into the opening period of their first game against the Buffalo Junior Sabres at the Pepsi Centre in Williamsville N.Y. Mike Christou, who toiled with the Stoney Creek Warriors in 2009-2010, got the visitors off to the fast start and before the end of the frame they would go two up with Christou assisting on a goal by second-year winger Andrew Radjenovic at just past the halfway mark. 2-0 Hamilton after one with Drew Fielding making seventeen stops.
Pat Conte, who had 21 goals as well as leading the club in penalty minutes at 116 last season, registered an unassisted shorthanded marker to get the home side on the board just over six minutes into the second period. The Junior Sabres pulled into the 2-2 tie courtesy veteran forward Matt Grazen with just over eight minutes left with a powerplay goal. Buffalo who had enjoyed a 17-10 shot advantage in period one outshot the Red Wings 13-9 in this one. Score tied at two after two.
Matt Carey got the Wings back in front with his goal just past the eight-minute mark of the third to open the season on a positive start and score a 3-2 victory on the road.
The teams split twelve minor penalties through the first two periods. There were none called in the final session.
As well as Christou Radjenovic, Buddy Robinson and Jesse Healy picked up assists in the win. Fielding was the busier goalie stopping 39 while Harrison Civin repelled 25 for Buffalo.
Not dressed for the Red Wings- blueliner Max Fogel, forwards Luke Nogard, Zach Hyman, defencemen Reilly Moore and John Gibson.
The Junior Sabres, who finished tenth in the 15-team OJHL loop last season, could not score an even-strength goal in this game.
