Mustangs draw first blood in lacrosse

In their first game of the 2010 Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association season, the Western Mustangs dropped the McMaster Marauders, 11-5, at Lamport Stadium.

Western opened the first quarter with two goals at 13:29 and 9:18 by Scott Tinning and Tyler Poulter respectively on Saturday.

Three minutes into the second quarter, 5’9” midfielder Tommy Hurley found the back of the net to add one for McMaster. Western followed with two additional goals before Mac’s Kevin MaCrory netted his first of two goals in the game at 5:46.

Scott Watson added one final goal for Western to send the two teams into the half with McMaster trailing 5-2.

The Mustang’s Dylan Pitchforth added another point for the team in purple before back-to-back Marauder power play goals by Michael Dawson and Kyle Dorosh tightened the game to two. With only 36 seconds remaining in the third, Reid Crombie scored his first of the game to extend Western’s lead once again.

Western outscored McMaster 4-1 in the final stanza to walk away with the victory.

MaCrory led the McMaster offence with two goals and an assist.

McMaster next plays the Laurier Golden Hawks on Alumni Field at 8:30 p.m on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
