A strong offensive performance from Chris VanSickle didn’t go unnoticed by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.
The Mountaineers’ second-year centre from Brantford led the way with a 20-point effort, scoring a couple of tries while completing five conversions in a 45-10 Mohawk rugby victory on Saturday against Trent.
And that was sufficient to name VanSickle male Player of the Week in OCAA play for the period ending Sept. 19.
Mohawk is the defending OCAA Division I champion.
From the women’s side, Durham’s centre fielder Erica Dewey was Player of the Week. The third-year fastball player from Port Hope, Ont., tied an OCAA single-game record with six RBI in a 19-0 victory over Seneca last Tuesday. Dewey was 3-for-3 at the place, scoring four runs herself.
The Niagara Knights women’s soccer squad and the La Cite Coyotes men’s soccer team were named OCAA Teams of the Week for the same period.
Niagara has a 3-0-0 record to begin the OCAA regular season after going 3-7-2 in 2009. Remarkably, all three victories (over Lambton, St. Clair and Redeemer) have been by 1-0 scores. First-year forward Erin Jennison (Grimsby) leads the Knights with two goals.
