The McMaster Marauders led the Guelph Gryphons from start to finish in their 9-4 win on Saturday (Oct. 30) in their Canadian University Filed Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) quarterfinal game. The Marauders upset Guelph who finished the regular season in first place in the CUFLA West division having defeated McMaster in both of their previous match-ups the season.
Tommy Hurley opened the scoring for McMaster at 8:48 in the first quarter. Kyle Dorosh, who would go on to be McMaster’s points leader, added a second goal for the Marauders in the final minute of the quarter.
Hurley opened up the scoring once again in the second quarter to extend the McMaster lead to 3-0. Guelph finally found the scoreboard with a minute remaining, however, Sean Deuchars answered back for the Marauders with three seconds left to give Mac the edge heading into the second half.
The Marauders and Gryphons traded goals in the third quarter, with Carter Williams and Dorosh striking twice for the Marauders, and Guelph scoring two of their own.
Heading into the final quarter McMaster led Guelph 7-3. Michael Dawson and Kevin MacRory added goals to extend the Marauders lead to 9-3. Brad Galante added a goal for Guelph with nine minutes left to play, however it proved to be too little too late for the Gryphons and when time expired the score stood at 9-4 for McMaster.
The win sends the McMaster Marauders to the CUFLA semi-finals against Bishop’s University. The game will be played Saturday, Nov 6 at 5 p.m. at St. Michael’s College School Stadium in Toronto. The Brock Badgers and Carleton Ravens are set to clash in the other semi-final, which will follow at 7:30 p.m. The winners of two semi-finals will meet in the Baggataway Cup National Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m.
