The McMaster men started off the 2011 portion of their basketball season on the right note, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks, 72-64, at the Burridge Gym.
McMaster came out strongly and established an early lead (20-9 at the end of the first quarter) in Wednesday’s (Jan. 5) Ontario University Athletics contest. That margin narrowed but McMaster was able to re-establish a 40-33 lead at the half.
It was all McMaster in the second half and the Marauders maintained their lead to close out the game.
Top scorers for the Marauders were Cam Michaud (Grimsby) with 18, Victor Raso (Hamilton) with 13, Kenan Etale (Dundas) with 11 and Jordan Tew (Greensville) with 10.
Top scorers for Laurier were Matthew Buckley (Waterloo) with 13 and Conor Meschino (Oakville) with 12. Laurier led in rebounds, 42-34, and in turnovers, 27-22.
The Marauders will look to get back to .500 on the season when they travel to London on Saturday (Jan. 8) to take on the Western Mustangs. The game tips at 3 p.m. and can be heard live on 93.3 CFMU and online at cfmu.msumcmaster.ca.
