In a last minute addition to the McMaster schedule, Lisa Giles captured gold in the women’s 1,000 metre at the 28th Annual Don Wright Team Challenge over the Jan. 21-22 weekend. Giles won the race in a personal best time of 2:58.65 and achieved the Ontario University Athletics standard, qualifying her for the 2011 championship.
Megan Beverley placed fifth in a time of 3:05.17, which also qualified her for the OUA championship. Lizz Hodgson placed fifth in the women’s 1,500m in a time of 5:06.02.
Caroline Ssemanda posted a time of 8.40 in the women’s 60m event. In the women’s 300m, Dana Hislop placed seventh in 43.98 and Morgan Van Mierlo was eighth in 44.22.
In the men’s competition, Eric Barry led the Marauders, placing eighth in the 1,000m in a time of 2:37.30 which qualified him for the OUA championship as well. Michael Percival was close behind in 2:37.59 followed by James Harrington in 2:37.61.
Graham Bowes was fourth in 4:10.10 in the 500m. Rounding out the distance events, Ryan Tice had an eighth place finish in the men’s 3,000m.
In the 60m sprints, Denis Noronha ran OUA standard and placed seventh in a time of 7.31. Rookie Garrick Mok ran 7.48 followed by Matt Pawelke in 7.51, Andrew Gapic in 7.67 and James Noordam in 7.69. Noordam also ran a 39.18 in the men’s 300m.
The Marauders will now travel to the McGill Team Challenge on Jan. 28-29.
