Mac rally falls short in women’s basketball

The McMaster women’s basketball team lost a nail-bitter to the Gryphons Saturday afternoon in Guelph. Marauder Taylor Chiarot (Hamilton) scored 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as McMaster fell to 5-13 in Ontario University Athletics play.

Both teams came out ready to play in the first as baskets from each end of the floor continued to drop. A late surge by the Gryphons would earn them the lead, 17-12, at the end of the first quarter. In the second, Elizabeth Burns (Hamilton) was hot for the Marauders ending the quarter with nine points. Guelph would hold onto its lead going into halftime up by six.

In the third, the Gryphons pulled away after a slow start from McMaster. Guelph’s Kayla Goodhoofd (Oakville) would be a quiet force for the Gryphons, helping her team score 20 points to McMaster’s 15.

In the fourth, after being down by a margin of 17, the Marauders began to cut into the Gryphons lead with baskets in the paint by Chiarot and Vanessa Bonomo (Dundas) up top. The Marauders would get within four but wouldn’t be able to cut Guelph’s lead any further. Guelph’s Sam Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) would solidify the Gryphons win with free throws down the stretch.

Chiarot had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the double double. Burns and Bonomo would both reach double digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Guelph’s Russell would grab a game-high 15 rebounds and score 10 for the Gryphons. Goodhoofd added 12 for Guelph.

The Marauders are in action on Monday night (Feb. 14) when they travel to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7 p.m.
