Warriors fifth straight win sets up key game


The Stoney Creek Jr. B Warriors (25-17-5) returned to Fort Erie on Wednesday evening and defeated the Meteors 6-2. With the win the Warriors are now within two points of the fourth place Welland Canadians (26-15-5).

Stoney Creek and Welland will face each other one more time, on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Valley Park Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. In their last meeting, the Warriors blasted the Meteors, 13-1.

In Fort Erie, the Warriors opened the scoring at 4:25 when David Ruberto scored his 20th of the year. Jason Shaw and Mike Casale picked up the helpers in the only goal of the frame,

Early in the second period, Stoney Creek added a second marker when Steven Mueller potted his fifth from Brad Kobryn and Mark Silvestri. Fort Erie’s Andrew Ansell scored on the power play to cut the Creek’s lead in half. Warriors’ defenseman Jason Shaw answered the Fort Erie score, at 13.35 with David Ruberto assisting. Less than two minutes later, Marcus Ruberto fired home his 16th of the year, from Casale and Brock Battochio.

At 6:01 Eric Muntz scored to pull the Meteors within two goals, 4-2.

However, just 22 seconds later Luke Nogard broke the hearts of those in Fort Erie. David Mazurek and Jason Shaw assisted on Nogard’s goal. About six minutes later, Shaw capped off a four point night with his 12th goal, Marcus Ruberto and Danny Carter notched the helpers.

Stoney Creek goaltender Marcus DelConte stopped 26 of 28. The Warriors had 42 shots on net.

The Warriors are on the road Friday, playing the Falcons in St. Catharines.
