‘Dogs need overtime to defeat Admirals power play

The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Milwaukee Admirals 5-4 in overtime on Wednesday night at Copps Coliseum. Nigel Dawes scored a natural hat trick while Alex Henry scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Dawes’ goals extended his goal-scoring streak to a league-leading eight games.

The Bulldogs opened the game’s scoring at 16:33 of the first period. Nigel Dawes picked up the puck at the blueline before skating between three Admirals players and sliding the puck between the pads of Milwaukee starting goaltender Mark Dekanich. Dawes added his second goal of the game at 18:11. Aaron Palushaj held onto the puck in the left corner of the Admirals’ zone before dishing a pass to Dawes, who was positioned in the slot. Dawes snapped a shot that beat Dekanich low on the glove side.

Dawes completed the natural hat trick with a goal at 1:23 of the second stanza. Palushaj received the puck from Olivier Fortier, before dishing the puck Dawes, who was in the slot. Dawes proceeded to backhand a shot past Dekanich and into the top of the net.

Following this goal, Jeremy Smith replaced Dekanich in the Milwaukee net.

The Admirals got on the scoreboard at 4:31 of the middle frame. Ryan Thang sent a pass to Chris Mueller, who fed the puck into the slot, where Teemu Laakso was stationed. Laakso proceeded to slide the puck through traffic and underneath Hamilton starting goaltender Drew MacIntyre. Milwaukee cut the ‘Dogs lead to one at 6:26. Ryan Flynn gave the puck to Scott Ford, who was at the right point. Ford blasted a shot that traveled through traffic in front of the net before beating MacIntyre through the five-hole. The Admirals tied the score at 18:27 with a power-play goal. Andreas Thuresson received the puck from Mueller before skating towards the net and firing a shot on MacIntyre. The goaltender saved the initial shot but could not control the rebound, which Thuresson grabbed and whacked past MacIntyre.

The Bulldogs regained their lead at 6:59 of the final frame. Hunter Bishop skated down the left side of Milwaukee’s zone before firing a shot that was stopped by Smith. The rebound bounced out to Dany Masse, who backhanded a shot past the goaltender and into the net.

The Admirals tied the game 4-4 at 10:23 while on the power play. MacIntyre stopped a shot from Thuresson but could not hold onto the rebound. Gabriel Bourque grabbed the loose puck before backhanding a shot past MacIntyre and into the net.

The ‘Dogs won the game with four seconds remaining in the overtime period. Dawes came streaking down the right wing and slid a pass over to the left side to Alex Henry. Henry slid the puck through the legs of Smith and across the goal line to secure the victory for Hamilton.

The Bulldogs will welcome the Toronto Marlies to Copps Coliseum in the first of back-to-back games against the club on Saturday, March 5th at 4:00 p.m. The teams will meet in the second game on Sunday, March 6th in Toronto at Ricoh Coliseum for a 1:00 p.m. game.
