Playoff spot still one point away for Bulldogs

The Hamilton Bulldogs were defeated by the Abbotsford Heat 1-0 on Monday night (April 4). Tyler Ruegsegger scored the only goal of the game in the third period and Leland Irving made 23 saves for the shutout in American Hockey League play.

The loss snaps a five-game winning streak and seven-game point streak which Hamilton was on and keeps their magic number to clinch a playoff spot at one. If Hamilton earns a point in Tuesday’s rematch, they will clinch a berth in the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Following two scoreless periods, the Heat got on the scoreboard at 4:29 of the final frame with a power-play goal. Justin Dowling sent a cross-ice pass to Ales Kotalik, who one-timed a shot. The puck deflected off the stick of Tyler Ruegsegger and eluded goaltender Drew MacIntyre.

Abbotsford had a slim 25-23 edge in shots on net. A crowd of 4,686 took in the contest.

Tuesday’s game in Abbotsford starts at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.
