The Hamilton Cardinals Minor Peewees started the year off on a winning note, defeating the Kitchener Panthers tier 1 team, 8-4.
Starting pitcher Ty Whalen threw three strong innings in the Intercounty Baseball Association League game at Hamilton’s Mahoney Park, striking out six and giving up one run in the May 5 game. Ayden Hannon came on in relief, and threw three innings, striking out a trio and also giving up a run.
Michael Ssemanda closed it out by pitching the seventh, after having been hit twice at the plate and walked once, stealing three bases and scoring 2 runs. The pitching was aided by strong defensive play including an outfield assist in the top of the fifth when Nolan Gallo threw out the lead off runner at second base when he was trying to stretch a single into a double.
The Cardinals scored eight runs on seven hits, including two-for-three performances from Jacob Underwood and Ty Whalen with both scoring two runs. Whalen recorded the only extra base hit for the Cardinals with a double in the sixth inning. RBI were recorded by Shane Samson, Noah Britt, Ayden Hannon and Justin Jeffrey.
The Panthers four runs came from five hits.
