OCAA badminton can expect Royal treatment

The top badminton players in the province are heading to Ancaster.

Plans are already underway as Redeemer University College was chosen to host the 2012 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association badminton provincial championships. The tournament will run over three days from Feb. 16h-18th with all matches taking place at the Redeemer University College Athletic Centre.

Redeemer will look to build on its success of hosting provincial championships and host a memorable event for the top badminton student-athletes in Ontario. Last year Redeemer hosted the OCAA’s top volleyball teams for the men’s provincial title.

The event garnered a lot of attention both provincially and nationally as Redeemer Royals fans came out in record numbers and filled the gymnasium to show their support. The Royals are known as having some of the greatest and loudest fans in the country.

Now, the Royals varsity badminton team will get its chance to play in front of a home crowd should they qualify for the championships. The way the program is progressing, the Royals should have a great opportunity. After the badminton program was cut at Redeemer in 1992-93, the team has made waves in the OCAA since it was resurrected in 2009. In its first year back, men’s singles player Randall Brus won a provincial bronze medal.

This past year, Randall finished fourth at the championships. The team finished second at the regional championships and had players qualify for the provincials in men’s singles, women’s singles, and women’s doubles.
