Thomson right at home in NASCAR north series


The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series makes its fifth visit to Mosport Speedway, near Bowmanville, on Saturday (May 28) for the Dickies 200. It is the 2011 season’s opening event and the first of seven oval-track races on the year. Below is a statistical look at the race and recent performance of selected drivers at Mosport Speedway, as well as some statistical trends:

Don Thomson Jr. (No. 8 Farmers Feed Families Dodge)

  • The Hamilton driver won inaugural series race at Mosport Speedway in 2007 and again last season
  • Posted top-five finishes in his other two starts at the track – fourth (2008) and fifth (2009) Has led a series-high 311 laps at the Mosport oval
  • Holds the overall series career mark for poles with 11
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

Jeff Lapcevich (No. 23 Tim Hortons Dodge)

  • The Grimsby racer finished 18th last season and 13th in 2009 in his only Mosport Speedway starts
  • Closed out 2010 season with three straight top 10s.

Ron Beauchamp Jr. (No. 60 Mopar/Mobil 1 Dodge)

  • Has finished fourth in each of his last two starts at Mosport Speedway
  • Posted finishes of 19th and 12th in first two starts on the Mosport oval
  • Closed the 2010 season with five straight top-10 finishes
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

Mark Dilley (No. 9 Rheem/PartSource Dodge)

  • Has registered a pair of runner-up finishes – 2007 & 2008 – at Mosport Speedway
  • Finished seventh in last season’s Dickies 200
  • Led a total of 72 laps on the oval at Mosport
  • Logged top-10 finishes in six of his last eight outings in 2010
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

JR Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Schick Hydro Chevrolet)

  • Finished second last season at Mosport Speedway
  • Has finishes of sixth (2007) and 13th (2008) in his other two outings at Mosport Speedway
  • Set track record of 21.592 seconds (83.364 mph) in 2007 qualifying
  • Has six victories in his series career
  • Five of his six career series wins have come on road courses – Mosport (2), Edmonton (2) and Montreal
  • Has made four NASCAR Nationwide Series starts in 2011 and one in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Jason Hathaway (No. 3 Snap-on Tools/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge)

  • Posted career-best Mosport Speedway finish of fourth in 2007
  • Other three starts on the Mosport oval resulted in ninth-place finishes in 2008 and 2009 and a 14th-place result last season
  • Closed the 2010 season with four consecutive top-10 finishes
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

DJ Kennington (No. 17 Castrol Edge Dodge)

  • Posted third-place finishes at Mosport Speedway in 2008 and 2009
  • Finished sixth a year ago and 10th in the 2007 race on the Mosport oval
  • Has nine Canadian Tire Series victories; second on all-time list to Andrew Ranger (12)
  • Won 2010 series championship
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

Steven Mathews (No. 15 Mathews Motorsports Ford)

  • Made series debut in 2009 at Mosport and finished sixth
  • Logged a 13th-place finish in last year’s Dickies 200.

Kerry Micks (No. 02 Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging Ford)

  • Won the 2008 race at Mosport Speedway
  • Has three top 10s in other starts on the Mosport oval – third (2007), seventh (2009) and third (2010)
  • Has finished inside the top 10 in 11 of 13 series starts last season
  • Has one oval-track win (Mosport Speedway in 2008) and two road-course wins
  • Is one of seven drivers to compete in all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

Pete Shepherd III (No. 7 National Exhaust/HY-Tech Dodge)

  • Making his second Mosport Speedway start after finishing fifth in last year’s event
  • Led a total of 52 laps at the Mosport oval a year ago
  • Earned his first Canadian Tire Series victory in the 2010 season finale at Kawartha Speedway.

Anthony Simone (No. 95 Rx100 Chevrolet)

  • Has registered back-to-back top 10s at Mosport Speedway – 10th (2009) & 8th (2010)
  • Finished 19th on the oval at Mosport in his rookie year of 2008
  • Had top-10 finishes in three of final five starts in 2010.

Dexter Stacey (No. 55 Bully’s Truck Stop Dodge)

  • Has finishes of 19th (2010) and 20th (2009) in his two Mosport Speedway outings
  • Was runner-up to 2008 Rookie of the Year Joey Hanssen.

Scott Steckly (No. 22 Canadian Tire Dodge)

  • Logged a career-best Mosport Speedway finish of second in 2009 race
  • Other three starts on the oval at Mosport resulted in finishes of seventh (2007), 21st (2008) and 17th (2009)
  • Has led a total of 136 laps in action at Mosport Speedway
  • Has eight NASCAR Canadian Tire Series wins to his credit
  • Won 2008 series championship
  • One of seven drivers to start all 51 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races.

Isabelle Tremblay (No. 07 Group Beton Brunet/ADF Diesel Ford)

  • Making her Mosport Speedway debut in this year’s Dickies 200
  • Has made just one series start on an oval track – 21st at Kawartha in 2010.

Pete Vanderwyst (No. 5 EMCO Dodge)

  • Making NASCAR Canadian Tire Series debut
  • Splitting seat time with Noel Dowler, who will handle the road courses this season.

Derek White (No. 99 OCR Gaz Bar Chevrolet)

  • Finished 16th in last season’s Dickies 200 at Mosport Speedway
  • Was 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Rookie of the Year.

Jason White (No. 21 A&W Dodge)

  • Finished 20th a season ago at Mosport Speedway
  • Finished 16th in each of his first two races at the Mosport oval in 2008 and 2009
  • Was 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Rookie of the Year.
