The Hamilton Cardinals Minor Peewee team split a doubleheader in Stratford, winning the first game 11-10 and falling in the second 15-11 to the Indians.
Justin Jeffrey started the first Inter-County Baseball Association game and went 2 2/3 giving up six runs – three unearned – on five hits with five strikeouts. Kole Bishop finished the game and recorded the win.
The offense came from all parts of the order as the Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning and kept the offence going, with leadoff hitter Michael Ssemanda going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Nolan Gallo going 2-for-4 and scoring three times, Dawson McLaughlin went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. One of his hits missed leaving the park by a couple of feet,
David Candy and Justin Jeffrey scored two runs each, Ayden Hannon, Shane Samson, Jacob Underwood and Bishop all chipped in with hits.
In the second game, the Cardinals started strong again, taking a 3-1 lead after the first, but losing pitcher Ayden Hannon couldn’t keep the momentum going in the second as he struggled.
The Indians sent 16 batters to the plate and recorded 13 runs. Michael Ssemanda came on in relief and recorded the final out in the second and went the remainder of the game, giving up a single run after the inning.
The Cardinals fought back with four runs in their half of the second, three in the fourth and another in the fifth to make it close. Ssemanda continued his strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and Gallo went 2-for-4 scoring two runs and recording an RBI. Hannon went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Singles were recorded by David Candy, Dawson McLaughlin, Shane Samson and Josh Miller-Koren.
The highlight came in the second inning when Justin Jeffrey hit a towering two-run homer deep over the left field fence.
