Mohawk women’s volleyball in pre-season tourney at Brock

The Mohawk varsity women’s volleyball team, under new head coach Andrew Nicholson, started pre-season tournament play with a match against Cape Breton University Capers at Brock University in St. Catharines Friday (Sep. 23).
The team got off to a slow start due to some weak serve receive and fell 10-25 to a team that had already played one match against the hosts, prior to the Mountaineers’ arrival. After adjusting the line-up slightly and inserting new setter recruit Megan Bros, Mohawk came out a totally different team. While still un-polished on both offense and defense, the Mountaineers were able to fight hard but fell just short at 23-25. The third set saw Nicholson experiment again with another line-up and this time the chemistry was not quite there dropping a 15-25 decision. The sides agreed to play one more set to 15 points and yet another line-up produced a spirited effort but another close 13-15 loss.
The Mohawk squad included only eight players due to absences and an injury but each player showed signs of a tenacious defensive side. “The team is using the pre-season tournament schedule to refine our rotations and find chemistry on defense, said coach Nicholson.  “Our Middle Blockers, new recruit Chi Chi Chuks Mady and returnee Kristin VanHartingsveldt, will be key to any success we have this year.”
Mohawk continues play at Brock Saturday at 9:00 am against the host Badgers.
