Mohawk divides pre-season basketball with Huskies

The Mohawk Mountaineers divided a pre-season basketball twin bill with Toronto’s George Brown Huskies at the Fennell Gym on Wednesday (Oct. 5).

The men’s team scored a 77-61 decision.

The Mountaineers came flying out of the gate to lead 12-0 and 15-2, but George Brown battled back and were within four points in the second quarter. But Mohawk didn’t break and led 33-25 at half time.

They then regained their form in the second half and built their lead to 26 points in the fourth quarter. Manny Campbell, of Burlington, a transfer from Fanshawe College in London, where he was an all-star, led an outstanding fast break and was the game’s top scorer with 16 points. Andrew Cicuttini scored 12, while Taylor Dowhaniuk and Tanner Lane added 11 apiece.

The Mohawk women bowed 71-63 to the Huskies, but appear to be a much improved team this season. Kimithy Stilwell led the Mountaineers with 13 points and Joanna Brown had 10.

Mohawk led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but couldn’t maintain that momentum. George Brown got a big steal in the dying seconds and hit a 3-point buzzer-beater for a 45-41 half time lead and while the Mountaineers stayed with them throughout the second half, the Huskies were able to stay in front.
