Orillia skates to victory over Dundas Real McCoys

Bus and traffic problems, a short bench, and an improved Orillia Tundras squad resulted in three unanswered goals in the second period as Orillia skated to a 5-2 victory over the Dundas Real McCoys in the West Orillia Sports Complex last Friday night.
“We may not be better than last year, but we will be smarter and younger because five of our players come from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport ranks as quality University players, said McCoys General Manager Don Robertson.
“We are off to Norwood Friday with more bodies.  That said the group played well and Jeff Maund was strong in goal for our first outing.  No exhibition games before the season starts hurts us for the first couple games.”
Both teams traded goals in the first period with Dundas opening and closing the scoring before both teams skated off in a 2-2 deadlock.  Adam Schwark scored the first goals of the season for Dundas with Shawn Thompson and Cale Tanaka assisting.  Their final goal of the night came at 11:37 of the first period when Cam Watson converted a play set up by TJ Sakaluk and Dave Russell.  Brandon Ingraham, Jeff Hopkins, Andrew Hawke, Kevin Shoebridge, and Nevin Hamilton replied for Orillia.
It was not a great day all-round for the McCoys last Friday.
“We had trouble getting there (Orillia) because of bus and traffic problems on the 400.  Why we were heading north on the last long weekend of the year is a good question,” said Robertson.  “Our short bench caught up with us plus the Tundras are a much improved squad over last season.  It won’t be easy to beat them at the best of times this season.”
The McCoys are at Norwood Friday, October 14 to face the Vipers in the Asphode-Norwood Arena at 7:45 p.m.  The following Friday night (October 21), Dundas travels to the Telephone City to play the Blast in the Brantford Community Centre at 8 p.m.
