The inaugural OCAA women’s rugby season for Mohawk College was a big time learning experience for the Mountaineers. They didn’t win a game and Conestoga Condors showed no mercy with a 70-12 romp at Mohawk Sports Park in the season finale for the upstart Mountaineers on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Those who watched them play through the season, many of the players participating in the sport for the first time, saw a definite improvement in the college’s roughest. They kept playing and learning – through numerous injuries and not the most pleasant weather conditions. The women eventually managed to score their first try and more were to follow.
And in the finale, the women Mountaineers scored twice. Tara McKim and Eryn Matisz each had tries and Danika Faucon, who had a good year kicking, converted one of the two major scores.
Conestoga certainly was not about to give any quarter. Caitlin Martin led the way with four tries. Courtney Muise and Amber Vinandy each had two. Single tries went to Rebecca Bannon, Erin Blakely, Stephanie Heffer, Bethany Parker, Valerie Shantz and Nicole Green.
