The Abbotsford Heat defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 6-2 at Copps Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. Dustin Sylvester scored two goals including the game-winner while Krys Kolanos and Ben Walter each had a goal and two assists.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 4:21 of the first period on a shorthanded goal by Olivier Fortier. Joe Callahan cleared the puck down the ice on the left side and Fortier beat the Abbotsford defender to the puck and went in alone on Abbotsford Heat starting goaltender Leland Irving. Fortier cut in to the slot and slid the puck under Irving and in the net.
The Heat tied the score at 6:00 of the opening period on a tally by John Armstrong. Logan MacMillan fed the puck to Armstrong who skated into the slot and wristed a shot over the shoulder of Hamilton starting goaltender Nathan Lawson.
The Heat took the lead on a power play goal by Krys Kolanos at 5:01 of the middle stanza. Clay Wilson feathered a pass to Kolanos who one-timed the puck past Hamilton goalie Robert Mayer on the far side of the net. Abbotsford extended their lead at 6:46 of the second period on a goal by Dustin Sylvester. Gaelan Patterson cut into the slot, and dropped a pass to Sylvester who rifled a shot top shelf over Mayer.
The ‘Dogs scored their second goal of the game at 2:03 of the final frame on a power play goal by Andreas Engqvist. Louis Leblanc was positioned at the left point and slid a pass to the right corner where Philip DeSimone picked up the puck and spun a shot toward the net which deflected off Engqvist and in the net past Irving.
The Heat extended their lead at 2:32 of the third period on a 5-on-3 power play goal by Clay Wilson. Kolanos was at the left point and passed the puck over to Wilson at the right point who then wired a wrist shot over the glove of Mayer. Abbotsford added another tally at 4:23 of the third stanza by Sylvester on the power play. After a faceoff win by the Heat, Sylvester grabbed the puck out of a scrum and fired a shot over Mayer. Ben Walter added a sixth marker of the game for Abbotsford at 10:32 of the final frame.
