Mohawk outlasts Knights, meets Seneca in rugby playoffs

Mohawk Mountaineers have advanced to the semi finals in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Division 1 rugby. Mohawk shaded the Fleming Knights of Peterborough 35-33 in their qualifying game at Mohawk Sports Park on Oct. 29.

The game was in stark contrast to their regular season meeting when the Mountaineers eked out an 8-5 verdict.

This time, Graham McKelvey scored two tries for the Mountaineers, while Ross Isbister, Cody Taylor and Riley Cronsberry had one apiece.

Joel Clarke kicked two penalties and two converts for 10 points.

Replying for the Knights were David Beukeboom, Brendan McDougall, Cameron Watson, Michel Braiden and Chris Tomas. Ian Fuchs contributed four converts.

“Fleming was a hard game,” said head coach Alex Paris. “We have lots of small injuries within the team. We will need to heal before our semi final game Saturday (Nov. 5)”. The Mountaineers visit the Seneca Sting in North York at 2 p.m. “Seneca will be (a difficult) game,” said Paris, but the boys will do what they need to do, as they have done all year.”

Trent visits Humber in the other semi.
