Mohawk College’s men’s volleyball squad went 6-1 at the Humber Cup Invitational Tournament in Etobicoke on Oct. 28-29. The Mountaineers dropped only one set in pool play.
Mohawk blanked Durham 26-24, 25-17 and swept Trent 25-18, 25-17 before edging Loyalist 2-1 with a 25-14, 22-25, 15-11 decision. Mohawk completed the prelims with a pair of 2-0 victories, topping Cambrian 25-10, 25-18 and beating Redeemer 25-18, 25-22.
The Mountaineers’ sixth straight win was 2-1 over Fanshawe in the semi finals, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14.
However, the run ended in the championship match as Nipissing University scored a 25-19, 25-22 verdict.
Overall it was a good tournament, according to head coach Matt Schnarr.
“Our focus was serve and pass all weekend and I felt we were better in those categories than our opponents for most of the weekend,” said Schnarr. “(It)allowed our offense to have some great opportunities. Tournament All Star, Setter Mark Kaveckas, ran a great offense and gave our attackers excellent opportunities all weekend.
”Middle Mike Douglas and Left Side Ian Cameron had a great weekend attacking and defensively, while Justin Desroche provided a spark when called upon off the bench.”
Schnarr said it was a great way to end the pre-season heading into the first league match, Saturday Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. versus St. Clair Saints at the Fennell Gymnasium.
