Bulldogs show some scoring punch

The visiting Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the defending Calder Cup champion Binghamton Senators, 5-2, on Sunday (Nov. 13) at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa. Alexander Avtsin recorded three assists while Frederic St. Denis scored the game-winner and added an assist.

Hamilton led 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after two periods of play. The Bulldogs outshot the Senators 33-18 before a crowd of 8,427. The Bulldogs got goals from five different players – Brian Willsie, Joonas Nattinen, Andreas Engqvist, Louis Leblanc, and St. Denis. Scoring for the Senators were Patrick Wiercioch and Jim O’Brien.

Hamilton opened the scoring on a four-on-four goal by at 6:57 of the first period. Willsie flew down the wing and snapped a shot over the glove of goaltender Robin Lehner.

The ‘Dogs second tally came at 6:56 of the middle frame on a power play goal by Nattinen. A bouncing puck in front of the net came out to Nattinen who batted it out of the air and it fluttered by Lehner. Hamilton extended its lead six minutes later on a five-on-three power play goal by St. Denis. After picking up the puck at the point from a clearing attempt, St. Denis launched a rocket right into the roof of the Binghamton net.

The Senators got on the board at 15:59 of the second period on a power play goal by Wiercioch. After receiving the puck from Nikita Filatov, Wiercioch raced into the Hamilton zone on the right wing side, then weaved his way past defenders to get to the net and shovelled the puck under goaltender Robert Mayer.

The Bulldogs took their second three-goal lead of the game on a marker by Engqvist just 66 seconds into the third frame. Alexander Avtsin dropped the puck to Engqvist who shot it between the legs of Lehner from a sharp angle.

Binghamton cut the lead to two on O’Brien’s counter at 1:43 of the third period. He gobbled up a loose puck in front of the net and put it under Mayer.

Hamilton scored its final goal at 5:07 of the third stanza. Leblanc deked backhand to forehand and slid the puck past Lehner.
