The Mohawk Mountaineers ended a three-game losing streak with a 73-51 victory over the Sault College Cougars in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region women’s basketball at the Fennell Gym in Hamilton on Saturday (Nov. 26).
Rachelle Abella once again paced the winners with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kayla Michaelsen had 14 points. Lindsay Bokor and Megan Campbell added eight apiece.
Laura Lheto and Danielle White each had 12 points for the visitors from Sault Ste. Marie. Cheristy Akiwenzie scored 11 for the Cougars, whose record dropped to 1-7.
Mohawk led 41-28 at intermission.
“It was good to get some points,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. “We’ve been lacking offensively the last couple of games. But I told the girls not to kid ourselves. Our shooting percentage was not very high. We had a lot of offensive rebounds, (but) that’s because we were missing a lot of shots.”
Duffy said his team needs to clean up some things on offense. “We need to concentrate and finish.”
But the coach conceded it it’s great to get back into the win column after three straight losses and to get some momentum going into next week.
