Warriors held at bay by Blackhawks

The Stoney Creek Warriors traveled to Thorold Thursday night (Dec. 15) looking to inch closer to Welland in the Golden Horseshoe Conference standings but came away with a loss as the Blackhawks shut out the Warriors, 3-0.

Stoney Creek is 0-5 against Thorold in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play this season and has been outscored, 20-11. The Warriors wasted little time in setting the tone of the game, scoring what would stand as the winning goal just 65 seconds into the first period when Kelly Barchan connected.

After the Warriors Stephen Di Luca and the Blackhawks Ethan Witkop were penalized for roughing early in the second – Witkop getting a double minor – the Warriors went on the power play. A minute and a half into the power play Greg Cerilli scored a short handed goal for Thorold.

Twelve minutes later Thorold added its third goal with Kevin Lavoie scoring at 17:01 assisted by Ed Creighton.

The loss saw an end to several point streaks for the Warriors. Myles Falasca saw his 11-game run end as did Mike Casale, who was on a seven-game ride.

With the loss the Warriors’ record sits at 9-21-1 for 19 points. The team sits sixth in the Junior B conference just one point ahead of Fort Erie. The teams meet Saturday night at the Fort Erie Leisureplex for the first game in an important home-and-home series.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.
