Marauders just miss century mark in cage win

The McMaster men’s basketball team earned its eighth win of the Ontario University Athletics regular season on Saturday (Jan. 7) with a 97-84 defeat of the visiting Waterloo Warriors. Cam Michaud was the game-high scorer with 21 points for the Marauders. The team captain was also named the Big Mac Player of the Game.

A slow start to the game saw Michaud draw fouls twice within the opening minute of the contest. The Warriors took an early 8-6 lead and made another lay-up for the four point lead at 5:55, but McMaster would respond with a lay-up. Joe Rocca would tie it up at 10.

By 3:30, the Warriors would be forced to call their first time out of the game as the Marauders took a six point lead at 18-12. The Warriors would rally to catch up, but as the score read 19-18 in favour of the Marauders, Rocca sunk a three-pointer to put McMaster back ahead by four. The quarter would end with the Marauders up by five at 27-22.

The Marauders would maintain their five-point lead throughout the first part of the second quarter and would extend it to seven with a Victor Raso basket and foul. Both teams continued to foul throughout the second quarter and a number of missed shots on Waterloo’s end allowed the Marauders to keep their lead. A three-pointer from Brett Sanders put the Marauders up by six with less than two minutes left in the half. The final score going into halftime would be 43-38 in favour of the home team. Sanders would have a team-high nine points going in to the second half.

After two minutes in the third, the Warriors would call a timeout with McMaster ahead by eight thanks in part to a three-pointer from captain Raso. The Marauders would then finally take the double-digit lead at 61-49 mid-way through the third quarter with a three-pointer from Cam Michaud. Later in the quarter with 1:20 to go, rookie Aaron Redpath would sink a three to extend McMaster’s lead to 18. Despite the Warriors making a basket at the buzzer the scoreboard would read 74-58 for McMaster.

In the fourth, the Marauders continued to dominate the game pushing their lead to 23 with a dunk from Michaud. A number of Marauders were contributors to their eighth win of the season as they improved to 8-2 in conference play.

Joining Michaud in double-digit points included Rocca with 20, Raso with 11 and Redpath with 10.

For the Warriors, Wayne Bridge scored 20, Mike Wright recorded another 18, Cam McIntrye had 16 and Justin Johnson added another 11.

Next up for the Marauders is the Brock Badgers who are also fighting for the top spot in the OUA West. Tip-off is 8 p.m. at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
