The Mohawk women’s volleyball team split a pair of games with Georgian College on Saturday (Jan. 7) at Durham College in Oshawa and missed out on a playoff spot in the Adidas Cup Tournament.
The Mountaineers needed to sweep the Grizzlies from Barrie, and they started well, with a 25-15 first set decision. However, they lost the second game, 13-25, and ended up in a three-way tie with St. Clair and Georgian after round-robin play. They needed three more points in that second set to finish fourth in their pool, but they had three service errors in the first eight points and failed to find their scoring groove.
“The tournament was a ‘rust remover’ for us after the holidays,” said Mohawk head coach Andrew Nicholson. “And we showed nice progress in each match…a good sign for the second half of our (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) season.”
Earlier on Saturday, Mohawk drew its match with St. Clair. The Mountaineers won the first set, 25-21, but lost the second set, 19-25 to the Saints.
In opening round play on Friday, Mohawk was 1-2. The Mountaineers dropped their opener, 8-25, 13-25 to Cambrian, bounced back to down Fleming, 25-10, 25-17, but then lost 15-25, 19-25 to Humber.
