The McMaster women’s track team placed third at the Don Wright Meet hosted by London’s Western Mustangs on Saturday (Jan. 21). The men had a fourth place finish as both teams competed against other Ontario University Athletics members.
The only gold medal winner of the meet for the Marauders was Laura Morrison (London) in the 600m with a time of 1:38.45 for the OUA standard. McMaster’s Claire Stewart (Mississauga) took the bronze in the 1000m, also running the OUA standard.
Other notable finishes for the women’s team included rookie Sarah Wilson (Stratford) with a fourth place in the 600m and Katie Schurr’s (Komoka) fourth in the 1,000m. Veterans Sarah Haliburton (Richmond Hill) and Victoria Coates (Newmarket) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1,500m.
The Marauders now have four women ranked in the top 15 in the country in the 1,500m.
For the men, medal winners included Ruby Baronette’s (Hamilton) silver medal in the 600m at 1:22.72, rookie Blair Morgan’s (Yarker) bronze in the 1,500m at 4:07.84 and who ran the OUA standard and a personal best, and a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay. The Marauders relay team was made up of George Dicenzo (Brampton), Matt Pawelke (Waterdown), James Noordam (Millgrove) and Baronette and finished with a time of 3:34.16.
In the sprints, Latisha Rhooms (Richmond Hill) was a respectable seventh in the women’s 60m and Garrick Mok (Richmond Hill) took ninth in the men’s 60m.
Next up for the Marauders is the McGill Team Challenge taking place over two days, Jan. 27-28.
