Mac’s men grapplers wrestle down a silver finish

Four golds, and eight medals in total, were won by McMaster, as the Marauders were hosts for the Ontario University Wrestling championships on Saturday (Feb. 11).

Four-time gold medal winner Ryan Blake added to his collection taking the 72kg class by beating Western’s Sam Hanna. Veteran Kevin MacLellan used Brock’s Anton Schpillo, in the 82kg weight class, for his second gold medal of his varsity career. With rookie Jason Buckle picking up his first OUA glitter and Sean House giving the Marauders their fourth gold, the McMaster men’s team placed second to the Western Mustangs, missing top spot by five points.

Buckle finished at the top of his 57kg weight class, beating out Brock’s Tim Clement for the title while House won gold in the 90kg weight class, overtaking Western’s Kevin Ens for his first OUA gold.

McMaster’s only silver medal came from Chris Garneau in the 65kg weight class. The rookie lost out to Brock’s CJ Hudson in a close match.

Allan Middleton won the bronze medal match over Lakehead’s Gary Lynch at 61kg and Aaron Misner also won bronze in the 130kg weight class, beating out Mike Danley from Brock.

Other men’s results for Mac included a pair of fifth place finishes by Scukhjeeven Singh n the 68kg class and Eric Steffler in the 76kg division.

With a bronze in the 55kg class, Sydney Duggan was McMaster’s lone medal winner from the women’s side. She beat Lakehead’s Alexis Kraps.

Other notable performances came from Erica D’Angelo who finished fourth, having to forfeit the bronze medal match due to injury. Alyshia Anderson also finished fourth, losing out to Brock’s Deb Jehu in the 67kg bronze match. Bianca Fung took fourth in the 48kg weight class.

Placing fifth, in the 51kg class, was Nicole Mazara and Dorske Lee, in the 59kg division.

The women’s team placed fifth in team standings.
