Marauders bolster third place standing in basketball

Guelph – The McMaster men’s basketball team picked up its 15th win of the Ontario University Athletics season, dispatching the Guelph Gryphons, 87-79 on Saturday (Feb. 11).

Rookie Joe Rocca scored a team-high 27 points in the win which left the Marauders in third place with two games remaining in the OUA’s West division.

The host Gryphons outscored the Marauders in the first quarter, 17-15, but in the following period, McMaster took the lead, 37-32. The Marauders held a slim 58-54 edge to start the final quarter and out-scored Guelph 29-25 for the win. The result left Guelph with an 8-12 record.

Rocca’s 27 points were accompanied by 19 from fellow rookie Aaron Redpath. Cam Michaud scored 15 points and added six rebounds and point guard Adam Presutti scored 12 more with six assists.

For the Gryphons, Dan McCarthy recorded a game-high 31 points. The only other Gryphon to get in double digits was Kareem Malcolm with 17.

The Marauders travel to London on Wednesday (Feb. 15) to face the 8-12 Western Mustangs.
