Mohawk’s Brian Jonker is the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association West Region basketball coach of the year.
Jonker saw his Mountaineers improve on their 2010-11 record by two games and posted wins over Humber, Sheridan and Fanshawe, all OCAA medalists last season. Mohawk finished with a 13-5 record, and has won 11 or more games in four of the past five seasons.
OCAA West scoring champion Aminu Bello of Mohawk was named an All Canadian and West Region First-Team All-Star.
Bello, a fifth-year player from Sir John A. Macdonald high school in Hamilton, averaged 24.4 points per game for a total of 440. The guard led the OCAA in field goals, making 159-of-322 and free throws, going 84-of-99.
Mountaineers’ Manny Campbell was named to the West Second-Team All-Stars.
Mohawk opens play in the OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship at Algonquin College in Ottawa on Thursday (March 1). The Mountaineers will face the Centennial Colts of Scarborough in quarter final play.
