Mountaineer double winner in women’s basketball

Rachelle Abella, who was outstanding during the Mohawk women’s basketball team’s best season in years, picked up two big awards at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s basketball banquet in North York on Thursday (March 1).

Abella was named to the West Division First All-Star Team and was the division’s Defensive Player of the Year.

The 5’4″ Mountaineer guard from St. Jean de Brebeuf in Hamilton, scored 364 points in the 2011-12 campaign, averaging 20.2 points per game, which made her one of the top shooters in Canadian college ball all season long.

Abella led the West with 67 steals and 74 of her 110 rebounds were on defense.
