McMaster Marauders star quarterback Kyle Quinlan is this year’s recipient of the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year award. The honour was bestowed upon the passer at 27th annual CYO Celebrity Dinner on Thursday (March 1).
Quinlan was the first quarterback in McMaster school history to lead his team to a national collegiate championship, helping defeat the ever-strong Laval Rouge et Or at the Vanier Cup in Vancouver, B.C. in November. The fourth-year student-athlete passed for 482 yards and ran for another 106 at the national championships. He was named the offensive MVP for that double overtime game.
The South Woodslee native also lead the Marauders to a Yates Cup win over the Western Mustangs and a Uteck Bowl win over the Acadia Axemen.
Quinlan will be attending the CFL’s evaluation camp this weekend as one of three quarterbacks invited.
The CYO Celebrity Dinner raises funds — $1.4 million over the years — for kids with special needs at Camp Marydale. Candidates for the Golden Horseshoe award must be residents of Hamilton or Burlington. They can be professional or amateur, with results at the provincial, national or international level. The accomplishment can be as an individual or part of a team.
