Mohawk Mountaineers, the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association men’s basketball champions, have been named its Men’s Team of the Week.
The Mountaineers did something that has not been done since the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau was prime minister: They won their first OCAA men’s basketball championship since 1972, defeating three-time defending champion Humber Hawks, 89-86, in the provincial tournament finale at Algonquin College in Ottawa.
Mohawk’s all-Canadian guard Aminu Bello of Hamilton was named player of the game, scoring 33 points.
Meanwhile, Bello’s teammate and fellow guard Manny Campbell is a double Student-Athlete Award winner. Campbell, who was earlier chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the championship, is double recipient of the OCAA Overall Male Athlete of the Week and the Male Basketball Player of the Week awards.
The fourth-year player from Burlington scored 48 points and earned 15 assists while grabbing eight rebounds and completing six steals to finish a great week for Campbell. Prior to the tourney, he was named an OCAA West Region Second Team All-Star.
Mohawk will represent the OCAA at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national finals taking place in Truro, N.S., from March 15-17.
