ST. JOHN’S, NL – A season low of just 12 shots net played a large part in the Hamilton Bulldogs wrapping up their season series against the St. John’s IceCaps on a less than positive note – a 6-0 loss – splitting the Tuesday-Wednesday, back-to-back March 13-14 games. The result left Hamilton with an American Hockey League record of 3-4-1-0 against the Ice Caps this season.
The IceCaps took a 1-0 lead at 15:18 into the first period when Spencer Machacek’s backhand shot from behind the net bounced behind netminder Nathan Lawson who was peppered with shots. Just 2:07 later, Zach Redmond sent the puck up high to make it 2-0 IceCaps.
St. John’s led Hamilton 17-4 in shots after 20 minutes.
Machacek scored his second of the game on a second period power play, deflecting Jason Jaffray’s point pass into the Bulldogs net for a 3-0 lead. Machacek completed his hat trick at 11:07 into the period on another power play. With Robert Mayer taking over netminding duties for the Bulldogs, Aaron Gagnon scored his 10th of the season with less than five minutes to play in the second stanza.
The IceCaps completed their scoring when Jason Gregoire was credited with a goal just 2:04 into the third period.
A crowd of 6,287 was on hand.
