ROCKFORD, IL – The Hamilton Bulldogs were outshot almost two to one but outscored their opposition, the Rockford IceHogs 3-1 in an American Hockey League game on Tuesday (March 20).
Bulldogs’ netminder Robert Mayer stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced while his counterpart, Carter Hutton, turned aside 16 of the 19 he saw.
Hamilton took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on Brian Willsie’s 11th goal of the season. Joonas Nattinen, who assisted on Willsie’s goal, doubled the count when he scored his ninth of the season on a power play just 5:05 into the second period. Alexander Avtsin and Willsie had the assists.
The IceHogs capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity midway through the second period as Jeremy Morin scored his fifth of the season to cut the Bulldogs’ lead in half.
While playing shorthanded, Gabriel Dumont sealed Hamilton’s victory with an unassisted empty net goal.
A crowd of 3,452 took in the game which saw a total of 16 penalties called, eight of them for roughing.
