The McMaster men’s basketball team left one final mark on a very successful season.
The team was honoured with the McMaster Students Union Spirit Award, which is presented annually to the campus group best demonstrating enthusiasm, participation, dedication, and is a crucial proponent in increasing school spirit at McMaster University. It’s the first time a Marauder team has captured such a distinction in the history of the award.
Throughout the school year, the basketball team has engaged the McMaster community by participating in such events as the annual MSU Pride Parade, hosting the very successful inaugural Midnight Madness and the Pack This House event, in addition to forming relationships with various campus partners including the student spirit squad, the MSU Maroons. These special events were spearheaded by Scott Laws, team Marketing Director, and a fourth-year player who was sidelined due to injury, but made every second of his time count for the team.
In attendance to accept the award were Brett Sanders and team captain Victor Raso. Second-year head coach Amos Connolly has dedicated himself to building stronger ties with the students at large, stating, “The award was particularly meaningful because we made a concerted effort to re-engage students with our team. In particular, Scott Laws worked extremely hard to design events that he felt would give our student body a chance to come support us while at the same time being fully appreciated by our players. After Midnight Madness, we knew we were on to something.”
Second-year head coach Amos Coach noted how vital it is for varsity teams to connect with the rest of the student population.
“Our men’s basketball team has traditionally been very well supported by our local community. The change in demographic that we experienced this year was very special; more students were at our games, involved and engaged. I know I speak for our players when I say how much they value the relationship between our team and the MSU. The award was icing on the cake – it demonstrated to our team, and particular Scott Laws, that true effort coupled with genuine passion will be rewarded. On behalf of our team, I want to thank the MSU for recognizing our efforts, but more importantly, supporting our team throughout this season. This is certainly a relationship that we want to build upon – students supporting students is an awesome thing.”
