The Golden Horseshoe will have strong representation when the champion Toronto Varsity Blues take on the Ontario University Athletics all-stars in the sixth annual OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase. The game will start after Sunday’s (May 20) the Toronto Blue-New York Mets contest which begins at 1:07 p.m. Fans can enter Rogers Centre through Gate 8 free of charge following the Jays game (approximately 4:30 p.m.), or purchase tickets to both by visiting bluejays.com.
Ten players from this area will play in the game with nine making the All-Stars roster. They include: McMaster Marauder right-handed pitcher Carlos Cabrero (Burlington), Waterloo Warrior designated hitter David Allen (Burlington), Brock Badger shortstop/right-handed pitcher Michael Cardinale (Mississauga), designated hitter Queen’s Gael Justin Firth (Oakville), Brock Badger outfielder Ricky Ferri (St. Catharine’s), Brock second baseman Matt Kissel (Whitby), Guelph Gryphon right-handed pitcher Dan McMullen (Burlington), Brock right-handed pitcher Kurtis Robinson Kurtis (Mississauga), and Brock’s first baseman Shaun Valeriote (Guelph). The All-Stars coaching staff will include Brock’s head coach Jeff Lounsbury
On the Blues team is Hamilton native and first baseman Brent Page.
The Varsity Blues claimed the OUA championship with a victory over the Western Mustangs last year. The Blues finished in a tie for third in the regular season with a 12-9 record and ran the table in the double elimination championship tournament defeating Western, Laurier and Western again to win their first championship since 2003.
In 2011, Brock rallied late to take an exciting game. The all-star team holds a 2-2-1 record with the inaugural game in 2007 ending in a tie.
