The No. 9 ranked McMaster women’s rugby team fell to the Queen’s Gaels on Alumni field on Saturday (Sept. 22). In their fourth game of the Ontario University Athletics season, the Marauders were unable to stop the undefeated Gaels, who waltzed to a 32-10 victory.
The loss left the Marauders in third place in the five-team Russell Division. Queen’s is perfect at 4-0 to lead the division.
Mac had the game’s first scoring opportunity very early in the first half, but rookie Stephanie Black (Ottawa) was unable to put the ball between the posts on the penalty.
Another 15 minutes would pass before the Gael’s got their first try of the match. Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) scored her first try, but Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) would miss the convert.
The Marauders pulled even when former Canadian Interuniversity Sport Rookie of the Year Cindy Nelles (Belleville, Ont.) pushed through from a scrum for the McMaster try. Black was unable to make the convert.
From there, Gaels Susan Heald (Burlington) and McEwen would put up two more tries and Popov would score a convert down the pipe just before half ended to lead 17-5.
Ten minutes into the second half, Queen’s would strike again with another try from McEwen to take a commanding 22-5 lead.
With 15 minutes to go in the game, Nelles struck again with her second try of the game and the Marauders’ final scoring effort. Black’s convert hit the post.
Queen’s continued to pound away at the Marauders and added two more tries, from Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) and Caitie Ryan (Kamloops, BC) to close out the game. .
McMaster visits Brock next Saturday (Sept. 29) to play the 0-4 Badgers.
