The Toronto Marlies defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs, 3-1, at the Cobourg Community Centre on Saturday (Oct. 6). Greg Scott scored the game-winning goal on a power play with just over two minutes left in regulation time.
The Bulldogs scored the opening goal of the American Hockey League game at 4:19 of the first period when Stephen MacAulay shovelled Kevin Gagne’s rebound past Marlies starting goaltender Ben Scrivens.
The Marlies tied the score at 2:34 of the second frame on a goal by Brad Ross, who beat Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer.
The Marlies took the lead on a power play at 17:55 of the third period. Jake Gardiner passed the puck from the right point to the right circle where Nazem Kadri was stationed. Kadri relayed the pass to Scott for the game-winner. Greg McKegg added an empty net goal with 48 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs will close their two-game pre-season schedule against the Marlies on Monday (Oct. 8) at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Funny 820 and hamiltonbulldogs.com. Derek Wills and Al Craig will have the Pioneer pre-game show at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs’ 17th season-opener is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan where they will play the Griffins. The team’s home-opener is set for Friday, Oct. 19 when the Marlies visit at Copps Coliseum.
