Mac rallies for chance to defend OUA soccer crown

The McMaster Marauders and Carleton Ravens will decide this year’s men champions in Ontario University Athletics soccer.

In two come-from-behind efforts in Saturday’s semi-final, the Marauders defeated the No. 5 Queen’s Gaels, 5-2, with a flurry of goals in extra time. The defending OUA champions trailed 1-0 and 2-1 before three goals in the extra session sent the Marauders into Sunday’s (Nov.4) final.

McMaster will meet the Carleton Ravens who upset the No. 1 ranked York Lions, 1-0, out of contention. The extra time loss was York’s first of the season.

Queen’s midfielder Nathan Klemencic (Trenton) gave the Gaels the lead near the 20 minute mark. But the Marauders responded before the end of the half when midfielder Paterson Farrell (Oakville) netted his ninth of the season.
In the second half, McMaster trailed 2-1 when Joseph Zupo (Toronto) scored on a penalty kick.

Fighting back for the second time in the match, 2011 OUA West Rookie of the Year, Gersi Xhuti (Etobicoke), connected for the equalizer in the 78th minute.

In extra time, Daniel Niksic netted the game-winning goal just five minutes in and the scoring didn’t stop. Muntazir Fadhel (Richmond Hill) added his second of the term at the 110th minute and three minutes after that OUA All-Star Mark Reilly (Hamilton) tallied his 12th.
