Hamilton’s Nicola Colterjohn has been named to Canada’s team that will challenge for the 2013 edition of the women’s water polo Canada Cup. The tournament will be held at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau, in Quebec, from Dec. 2-8.
Colterjohn, 21, is one of two goaltenders selected to the squad which totals 14 players, including nine members of the squad who competed at the World Aquatic Championships in Barcelona in 2013. Colterjohn, a member of the Senior Women’s National team, competed at the World’s.
She is also the goalie for the McMaster Marauders team.
Other National team members include Olympian Christine Robinson (Athens 2004) and team captain Krystina Alogbo, from Montreal. The group also includes five newcomers from national age group programs. The two youngest are Hayley McKelvey, from British Columbia, and Kindred Paul of Edmonton, who are both 17 years old.
Canada will face the national teams of the United States and Australia during the weeklong tournament in December. The event is an important element of preparation for other major international competitions on the way to the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016, and in the shorter term, the next continental qualification tournament held in mid-December for a berth in the FINA World Cup in Summer 2014.
