The Marauder women’s volleyball team had its five-match win streak snapped by the Royal Military College Paladins in Ontario University Athletics play on Friday (Jan. 31).

The host Paladins took the affair 3-2 in sets during a marathon, see-saw battle that saw the two teams enter extra points in the fifth set before it was decided. Set scores were 25-23, 14-25, 25-14, 22-25, 17-15.

McMaster rookie Sophie Bukovec led all scorers with 23 points, converting 18 of 45 hitting attempts against five errors (28.9 per cent) and adding five aces. Fellow outside hitter Lauren Mastroluisi was also productive in a losing effort, scoring 16 points including 13 kills on 35 attempts and three aces.

Danielle Vortisch and Chelsey Litjens each had 20 points for the host Paladins, while Nicole Behnke chipped in 15.

The Marauders, with their 10-6 record in the West Division, will look to bounce back on Saturday (Feb. 1) as they remain in Kingston to face the Queen’s Gaels. That match is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. The Marauders hold down second place, four points back of division leading Guelph Gryphons (12-5).
